Mickey Haller (Matthew McConaughey) is een populaire advocaat met een opvallende werkplek. Vanaf de achterbank van zijn Lincoln sedan houdt hij contact met zijn louche clientèle. Het gaat prima met zijn carrière en zijn dubieuze klantenkring, maar hij wacht op die ene grote zaak. Dan ontmoet hij Louis Roulet, een vermogende, knappe vastgoedhandelaar uit Beverly Hills. Roulet wordt beschuldigd van verkrachting en poging tot moord. De schijnbaar eenvoudige zaak ontwikkelt zich tot een lastig complot...
